Going Beyond the Greeting Card

Most mothers enjoy the outpouring of love that comes their way every May in the form of well-wishes, Hallmark cards, chocolates, and flowers. You may even have some more unique and personal ways of celebrating the moms in your life. However, Mother’s Day comes but once a year! Surely our moms deserve a little bit more. Here are a few ways to let Moms know they matter any day of the year.

  1. Tell her she’s doing (or did) a great job! Be generous with your praise for your mother. Be intentional about recognizing the ways that your mother poured into you and shaped you. Then tell her about it.
  2. Be quick to listen, and slow to offer advise. Listening to understand, rather than advise, will make any mom feel supported. This is an especially great way for moms to support one another. Avoid comparisons to your own children and make it OK for a mom to unload about her kids without feeling like she is being judged.
  3. Husbands, be the HERO! Come home from work and take an active role with your family. Don’t put work, friends, or sports ahead of listening to, playing with, and teaching your children. Want to really impress? Give your wife a “day away” now and then. Even if splitting the household chores is routine in your family, go the extra mile to give you wife that gift of some time off.
  4. Give Single Moms extra support. The mom who does it all shouldn’t have to do it all by herself. Make a point to ask the single moms you know how you can be a support to them. Encourage others in your neighborhood, your church, or another community to which you belong to create a formal structure for making sure single moms have access to childcare or a school carpools.
